Sciatica is pain in the waist area (backache) and is an extremely common symptom. It is the most common cause, after the flu, of being incapable to work.

Sciatica is divided based on the duration of the symptoms, in acute low back pain (duration 0-3 months), subacute (duration 3-6 months) and chronic (over 6 months).

This condition is usually caused by a herniated disk in the lumbar spine, applying pressure on a nerve root. Symptoms of this, may be local pain in the lower back, or reflecting the pain in the lower limbs. Numbness and weakness in muscles of those limbs may also occur.

1. Advanced age
2. Female gender
3. Manual labor
4. Wrong posture
5. Obesity
The diagnosis of Sciatica is made by a specialist and includes history, symptoms and clinical examinations. Some of the examinations are plain x-rays, CT or MRI and electromyography.
The treatment depends on the underlying cause. It can vary from conservative treatment with medication, physiotherapy, acupuncture, or more intrusive like surgery (eg hernia removal).
