Sciatica is divided based on the duration of the symptoms, in acute low back pain (duration 0-3 months), subacute (duration 3-6 months) and chronic (over 6 months).
This condition is usually caused by a herniated disk in the lumbar spine, applying pressure on a nerve root. Symptoms of this, may be local pain in the lower back, or reflecting the pain in the lower limbs. Numbness and weakness in muscles of those limbs may also occur.
