Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders. It is a brain disorder characterized by seizures of motor, aesthetic, mental and other manifestations. The cause is known in 30-35% of patients, while the rest belongs to idiopathic. This disease affects roughly 0.8% of the population. It often is hereditary and has a higher risk of developing either in childhood, adolescence or in people over 70 years old>70 ετών.

A number of reversible disorders, such as tumors, head injury, hypoglycemia, meningeal infections, alcohol deprivation in an alcoholic, can cause seizures.
Όταν δεν εμφανίζεται συγκεκριμένο αίτιο που προκαλεί παροξυσμούς, το σύνδρομο καλείται πρωτοπαθής ή ιδιοπαθής επιληψία.
When there is no specific cause for the seizures, the syndrome is called primary or idiopathic epilepsy. Any emerging crisis should be investigated as to the underlying causes, and the likelihood of a recurrence. .

Complete investigation includes neurological examination, blood tests, electroencephalography and magnetic brain imaging. Based on the findings and particularities of each patient, the possibility of adding systemic anti-epileptic treatment is considered.

In some cases, anti-epileptic treatment can only be taken for a period of time as epilepsy may subside. In other cases, the crises persist for life and long-term treatment is necessary.
