Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the most common problems a neurologist will encounter
Essentially it is the compression of the median nerve in the wrist’s carpal tunnel.
The syndrome is more common in women but also in patients with diabetes mellitus or thyroid disease. An important aggravating factor is the overloading and straining of the wrist (eg at work).
Symptoms
The main symptom is numbness, a ‘stream’ sensation and pain that can extend beyond the wrist. It often wakes the patient up during sleep or makes it difficult to perform fine movements with the fingers.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is usually achieved by clinical examination and confirmed by electromyographic examination. This determines the degree and exact location of the median nerve compression.
Treatment
Treatment involves resting the hand and using a wrist splint for relief. Sometimes anti-inflammatory treatment or vitamin supplements are given. In severe cases, surgical decompression of the nerve may be necessary..
